The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission announced that Kevin Muhlendorf will become the agency’s Inspector General effective July 28, with Acting Inspector General Katherine Reilly returning to her role as Deputy Inspector General. Muhlendorf is a former SEC and U.S. Department of Justice attorney and has spent the past nine years as a partner at Wiley Rein LLP focused on white-collar defense and government investigations in criminal and civil securities enforcement matters. During a 2023–2024 secondment, he served as Acting Inspector General for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, leading roughly three dozen auditors and special agents, overseeing investigations and financial and performance audits, and designing a whistleblower award pilot program. The SEC’s Office of Inspector General operates as an independent oversight unit, with inspectors general having a dual reporting relationship to the Commission and Congress under the Inspector General Act of 1978. Reilly has served as Acting Inspector General since May and will remain in that capacity until Muhlendorf assumes the role in July.
