The United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative’s Principles for Sustainable Insurance (PSI) Working Group for Nature has published “Breaking Ground: Getting practical with nature-related assessments for insurers,” the second report in its “Nature Uncovered for Insurers” series. The report shifts from high-level framing to practice-oriented guidance on how insurers can start conducting nature-related dependency, impact, risk and opportunity (DIRO) assessments. Drawing on experiences from PSI members and partners, the publication sets out practical considerations, use cases and examples for applying the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) LEAP approach to underwriting portfolios. It is positioned as guidance for insurers at different stages of integrating nature-related issues into underwriting and risk management, and follows the first report in the series, “Rooted in Risk: Framing nature-related assessments for insurers,” which focused on establishing the assessment framework.
