The Tanzania Insurance Regulatory Authority (TIRA), through Tanzania’s Insurance Commissioner Dr Baghayo Saqware speaking at the Nanenane exhibition, urged farmers, livestock keepers and fishers to take out insurance to protect investments against unpredictable disasters. The authority said it is running nationwide public education on agricultural and health insurance, particularly alongside government investment through the BBT programme. TIRA said 15 companies currently provide agricultural insurance. As an illustration of claims performance, Dr Saqware noted that tobacco farmers in Tabora region received more than TZS 2 billion in 2023 for losses, paid from a pooled fund of agricultural insurers. CRDB Insurance Chief Executive Officer and TAIC representative Wilson Mzava said the pooling arrangement supports affordable cover and faster payouts while reducing the burden on any single insurer when disasters occur, and the Insurance Disputes Mediator (TIO) urged consumers to submit complaints for alternative dispute resolution in line with the law.
