The National Bank of Bulgaria published a public reminder, linked to the introduction of the euro in Bulgaria, on how to recognise genuine euro banknotes and what to do if a counterfeit is suspected. The bank recommends checking authenticity using the “Feel, Look and Tilt” method without specialised equipment: feel the crisp, firm paper and raised print; look for the watermark and security thread against a light source; and tilt the note to see changes in images and colours on the hologram strip and the colour-shifting denomination numeral in the lower-left corner from emerald green to dark blue. It directs readers to the European Central Bank’s website for detailed descriptions of security features for the Europa series and the first series, advises people not to accept a banknote they suspect is counterfeit, and to notify the police if they have already received one. It also notes that knowingly using a counterfeit banknote is a criminal offence and that counterfeit notes have no value and are not compensated.
