The Hong Kong Monetary Authority has alerted the public to scam incidents reported by five banks and published links on its website to the banks’ own press releases. The cases relate to fraudulent websites, fake internet banking login screens, phishing emails or other scams reported to the HKMA, which reiterated that banks do not send SMS or emails with embedded hyperlinks directing customers to carry out transactions. The banks named are The Bank of East Asia, Limited, Shanghai Commercial Bank Limited, Chong Hing Bank Limited, Chiyu Banking Corporation Limited, and The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited. The first four reported fraudulent websites and internet banking login screens, while HSBC reported a fraudulent website and internet banking login screen. The HKMA also reminded customers that banks will not ask for sensitive information such as login passwords or one-time passwords by phone, email or SMS, including via embedded hyperlinks. Anyone who provided personal information or conducted financial transactions through or in response to the scams should contact the relevant bank using the details in the corresponding press release and report the matter to the Hong Kong Police Force’s Crime Wing Information Centre.
